Letters and parcels sent via Deutsche Post are set to become significantly more expensive from 2027 – a standard letter alone is expected to cost 20 cents more. In our view, the postage is unlikely to rise by that much.
The Federal Network Agency recognises too many of Deutsche Post’s costs as so-called ‘burdens’. The result is inflated postage rates. This allows Deutsche Post to cross-subsidise other business areas to the detriment of competition. We had already recommended in our 2025 Postal Sector Report that these costs be scrutinised more rigorously. Whilst the Federal Network Agency has examined our recommendations in detail, it has unfortunately not implemented any of them.
It should be ensured that customers bear only necessary costs. This will not jeopardise postal services in rural areas.
