2019 Postal Sector Report
In its sector report on the postal markets, the Monopolies Commission concludes that there is still no effective competition in the letter market. Deutsche Post AG remains the market leader with a market share of 86 per cent. Although the company faces competition from several parcel service providers operating nationwide in the parcel market, it dominates this sector too, with a 44 per cent share of turnover.
To strengthen competition in the letter market, the Monopolies Commission has repeatedly recommended a reform of the Postal Services Act. Key points on this matter have now been presented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
The planned amendment to the Postal Services Act presents an opportunity to boost competition in the postal markets. This opportunity must be seized now.
