2015 Energy Sector Report
The Monopolies Commission has submitted its special report pursuant to Section 62 of the Energy Industry Act, entitled ‘Energy 2015: A Competitive Market Design for the Energy Transition’. It examines the competitive situation in the electricity and gas markets and analyses the challenges facing the energy sector. One key focus of the Monopolies Commission’s report is on issues relating to the structure of the energy transition. The Monopolies Commission regards the planned further development of the current energy market design into an ‘Electricity Market 2.0’ as a possible path forward, albeit one associated with considerable risks.
Only if competitive mechanisms are consistently prioritised in the implementation of the energy transition will the costs of the energy transition be effectively limited.
