According to media reports, the postal service provider Deutscher Versand Service (DVS) and its subsidiary Xendis have filed for insolvency under their own administration; business operations are to continue. We are not aware of the specific circumstances – but regardless of this individual case, competitors to Deutsche Post are under considerable pressure.

We have long warned that special VAT rules and privileges for Deutsche Post jeopardise competition. This makes it all the more important to ensure effective competition and a level playing field in the postal market. We recommend establishing clear, uniform VAT rules for business correspondence that apply equally to all providers.

The Monopolies Commission’s relevant recommendations can be found in the policy brief on VAT and in the latest sector report, ‘Post 2025’.

- Tomaso Duso, Chair of the Monopolies Commission
