It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to the former Chairman of the Monopolies Commission, Professor Dr Dr h.c. Ulrich Immenga, who passed away on 14 March 2026 at the age of 91. Ulrich Immenga was a member of the Monopolies Commission from 1 January 1979 to 2 August 1989 and served as its Chairman from 8 July 1986 to 2 August 1989. As an outstanding scholar and a leading voice in competition law, he shaped the Commission’s work through his legal precision, his clarity on regulatory policy and his consistent advocacy for competition. Under his leadership, the Monopolies Commission further refined its role as an independent advisory body to the Federal Government.
Through his academic work, particularly in the field of German and European competition law, Ulrich Immenga provided groundbreaking impetus for the further development of competition law. As co-editor of the standard commentary *Immenga/Mestmäcker*, he has had a decisive influence on the debate on competition law for decades. His work has not only shaped legal practice but has also inspired generations of academics.
The ideas and principles that Ulrich Immenga brought to the Monopolies Commission during his tenure continue to have an impact to this day. His commitment to a liberal competition framework, his sharp analytical mind and his academic authority make him an enduring role model for the competition policy community. We will all miss Ulrich Immenga greatly, but his legacy will continue to shape the development of competition law in the years to come. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. We join them in mourning the loss of an extraordinary person, scholar and visionary. The Monopolkommission will always honour his memory.
