Curriculum Vitae of Prof. Dr Rupprecht Podszun

Prof. Dr Rupprecht Podszun holds the Chair of Civil Law, German and European Competition Law at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. He completed his legal training in Heidelberg, London, Munich and Geneva. After completing a PhD on international competition law, Podszun worked for over two years as an officer at the Federal Cartel Office. He then returned to academia, becoming a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich and completing his habilitation at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. From 2013 to 2016, he held a chair in intellectual property law at the University of Bayreuth.

Podszun was co-chair of the Commission on Competition and Artificial Intelligence at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and, from 2023 to 2025, chair of the Academic Society for Competition Law (ASCOLA), the global professional association for competition law. He served as a non-governmental adviser to the International Competition Network (ICN) and has been a substitute member of the Commission for the Investigation of Concentration in the Media Sector (KEK) since 2022. He is also a visiting professor at the Université d’Aix-Marseille. His research focuses on antitrust and competition law, issues of digital regulation (in particular the Digital Markets Act) and, more recently, sustainability issues. He has on several occasions acted as an expert witness for the German Bundestag, federal ministries, the European Commission and the European Parliament. Together with Justus Haucap, a former chair of the Monopolies Commission, he hosts the podcast ‘Bei Anruf Wettbewerb’.

Rupprecht Podszun has been a member of the Monopolies Commission since 1 July 2024.
