Digital markets are among the most dynamic and, from a competition policy perspective, most significant sectors of the modern economy. Large platform companies have established central digital ecosystems – with far-reaching consequences for other businesses and consumers. Artificial intelligence can amplify these dynamics: as a key technology driving economic transformation, it holds considerable potential, but also carries the risk of new market concentrations. The Monopolies Commission is monitoring these developments closely and, on the basis of Section 44(1), fourth sentence, of the German Act against Restraints of Competition (GWB), issues statements as and when required – in the form of special reports, policy briefs and other statements. The aim is to identify competition risks and formulate evidence-based recommendations for policy and regulation.
