Prof. Dr. Rupprecht Podszun

Prof. Dr. Rupprecht Podszun holds the Chair for Civil Law, German and European Competition Law at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. He completed his legal education in Heidelberg, London, Munich, and Geneva. Following a doctorate in international antitrust law, Podszun worked for over two years as a desk officer at the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt). He then returned to academia, becoming a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich, and completed his habilitation at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. From 2013 to 2016, he held a chair in intellectual property law at the University of Bayreuth.

Podszun served as Co-Chair of the Commission on Competition and Artificial Intelligence at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and was Chair of the Academic Society for Competition Law (ASCOLA), the global learned society for antitrust law, from 2023 to 2025. He served as a Non-Governmental Adviser to the International Competition Network (ICN) and has been an alternate member of the Commission on Concentration in the Media (KEK) since 2022. He is also a visiting professor at the Université Aix-Marseille. His research focuses on antitrust and competition law, issues of digital regulation (in particular the Digital Markets Act), and, more recently, sustainability topics. He has served as an expert witness on multiple occasions for the German Bundestag, federal ministries, the European Commission, and the European Parliament. Together with Justus Haucap, a former Chair of the Monopolies Commission, he hosts the podcast "Bei Anruf Wettbewerb" ("Competition on Call").

Rupprecht Podszun has been a member of the Monopolies Commission since 1 July 2024.
