Since its establishment in 1974, the Monopolies Commission has been assessing the state and development of competition in the German economy. Part of this assessment is identifying and ranking the largest firms in Germany.

The Top 100 panel serves as an indicator for the concentration of economic and political power in Germany. The firm-level data cover more than 5 decades and include several performance indicators, e. g. national value added, business volume, number of employees.

Information on shareholders as well as members of management and supervisory bodies furthermore allow for an analysis of personnel and capital linkages between these firms.

The background paper provides a detailed description of the data and an overview of its research applications.

Older versions of the dataset from prior reports are listed in the archive.
